Goalkeeper Drills
Keepers require very specific individual training drills and sessions to develop the skills that they need to be effective in the net. Here are a couple of my favorites:
Reaction Drill #1
This is a very simple drill that is great for developing the reaction time of your keeper.
The keeper begins in the goal with his back to the server. The keeper bends over and snaps the ball back between his legs to the server like a football hike.
He quickly turns around to defend a shot taken by the server. Repeat this drill numerous times with all kinds of service…on the ground, waist height & head height. You can make this drill more intense by shooting quickly and to the corners so that the keeper must fully extend to make the save.
Reaction Drill #2
Here is another very simple drill that I have found to be very effective in developing my keeper's reaction time and scrambling ability. Unless your keeper is at the most elite level, you will find that most driven shots have to be deflected and cannot be caught cleanly.
When this happens, a mad scramble ensues around the mouth of the goal as the keeper, defenders and attackers all challenge for the loose ball. Too often this results in soft goals that could be prevented.
I always run this drill myself in the practice before I am going to be in the nets as well. The drill itself is quite simple.
The keeper will start with his back turned to the server. The server will stand 3-4 yards away and simple toss the ball off the keeper's back. The keeper must quickly turn, locate the ball and pounce on it.
This brings up the key coaching point for this drill. Do not let your keeper merely turn around and pick up the ball. You want him to aggressively dive on the loose ball with game speed and intensity. He needs to get serious and get dirty!
You might have to provide some passive pressure by moving to the ball after it hits him as if to play it on goal. Perform 6-8 reps with your players each time to get it in their heads that they need to go after that ball.
Post to Post
This is one of my favorite drills to run with our goalkeepers. It does a really nice job of simulating the live game situation where a keeper has to cover the near post and then switch to handle a quick shot off a cross to the far post.
The drill begins with P1 and the GK passing the ball with their hands at chest level. Both players will pass the ball as quickly as possible while staying on their toes.
On your command, P2 will take a shot on goal. The goalkeeper has to quickly stop what he is doing on the near post and extend to make the save on the far post. P2 will want to shoot quickly enough to make it challenging for the keeper, but not so fast that he doesn't have a good chance at making the save.
P2 can vary the shot from low to high. You can also have P2 toss the ball to the upper corner instead of shooting. Encourage the keeper to really dive and go all out for the ball.
