Coaching Girl's Soccer

Having coached both girls and boys soccer, I can tell you from experience that there is definitely a big difference. Not in tactics, techniques or strategies, but in psychology. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind, especially if you coach co-ed teams.

  • Enjoy the game. Soccer is one of the rare sports that is not specifically strength or size dominated. Kicking a ball is more an exercise of form and timing than power.
  • Girls will often deeply consider things whereas boys will just take them at face value without a lot of analysis
  • Watch out for emotional differences between boys and girls. Girls don't typically handle being yelled at very well, while boys will more bow up when yelled at.
As a general rule, girl soccer players tend to be more into the passing game, whereas boys will want to hog the ball and dribble rather than share the ball.

Take advantage of this and work on developing a strong passing game with your girls. Here's a couple of other generalities to think about:

Coaching Boys Soccer
  • Intense Motivational Techniques work well
  • Coach should focus on the individuals rather than the team.
  • Encouragement is not always expected.
  • More distance relationship between the coach and players
  • Can handle longer more intense training sessions
Coaching Girls Soccer
  • People oriented, democratic approach works best
  • Coach should focus on the relationships among players
  • Encouragement from the coach is a necessity
  • More interaction between coach and players

6 Weeks To Soccer Magic! is the only soccer training program of its kind that successfully overcomes all the reasons kids don't like to go out in the backyard and practice. It is designed specifically for young girl soccer players between the ages of 8 to 14.

The best part is that 6 Weeks To Soccer Magic! only focused on a small group of “essential” soccer skills that, when learned and practiced, can help your daughter play well beyond the other players in her age group.
